What happens after I contact you?
I will arrange a time for an informal phone call in order to find out a bit more about what you want to get from our sessions and answer any questions you may have. I want you to get the best from therapy so if at this stage I don't think I have the right skills to support you appropriately I will let you know and where possible signpost you elsewhere.
What are you doing to be COVID safe?
When the pandemic started in 2020 I moved my practice online & this remains an option for you. I have not found any difference in the effectiveness of therapy practised this way.
The room I use for in-person therapy is spacious and we can open the window if you wish.
How often and how long will I need counselling for?
I see most people weekly or fortnightly for an hour, usually on the same day or time though I can be flexible if needed. How long you need support for is very individual, some people feel they have what they need after 6 sessions, others I have worked with for several years. This is something we can agree on together, though ultimately the decision on what we work on and how long for is yours.
Do you offer concessions?
There are a limited number of reduced rate places available which I offer to counselling students or those on a reduced wage. Feel free to ask me about this
Will talking about it make me feel worse? I’m worried that I might fall apart.
Exploring difficult life events, particularly those that occurred in childhood, can be very painful. This is partially why it is so hard to say how long therapy will last because we may need to take things slowly. Together we will find a pace that suits you. What you say, and when, is up to you.
Do you operate a waiting list?
If I am unable to accommodate you I will signpost you to other professionals where I can. Due to the open-ended nature of my service I do not operate a waiting list.
What if we meet and I decide you’re not the right counsellor for me?
That’s OK. There are many counsellors who work in many different ways with different areas of expertise. It is important that you find the therapist that is right for you.
What if I want to take a break?
Everyone's therapy journey is different. Sometimes it can be necessary to ask for more frequent sessions, sometimes it feels right to take a break. I can hold your appointment slot for you for up to 4 weeks. After that I reserve the right to offer your appointment time to someone else, though you are of course welcome to any other vacant time slots.
How else can I work with you?
I also offer supervision to student or qualified counsellors. You can find out more here.
